In early 1980, the fifty (50) cedis note was demonetised and withdrawn from circulation by the then Government. This exercise resulted in the loss of large sums of money which affected the finances of many people in Ghana. The citizens of Anum and its environs were noexception. As a result of this, the people of Anum realised the need for the establishmentof a rural bank in Anum to provide them with banking services within their locality.
Subsequently, some citizens of Anum, notably Messrs Thomas Gyau Ofosu,Mark F.Owiredu, S.H. Lah, E.K. Adams and Professor N.O. Anim, sold the idea to the variousbranches of the Anum Improvement Association within and outside Anum who offered their unconditional acceptance and support.
With the blessing of the Anum Traditional Council, an application for the opening of a rural bank at Anum was sent to the Bank of Ghana. Inspectors were subsequently despatched to Anum to assess the viability of the proposal. The main problem at the time was the acquisition of a suitable building to be used as the premises of the bank. After series of inspections of various buildings, the property of the late Opanyin KwameKafena was accepted subject to extensive demolition, re-erection of walls and total renovation.
While the renovation was going on, efforts were made by some citizens of Anum, including Messrs T.G. Ofosu, S.O, Adams, S.H. Lah, E. K. Adams and the Anum Improvement Association for the mobilization of 50% of the citizens’ initial minimum capital requirement of ₵250,000. The bank of Ghana also provided a preference share capital of ₵125,000.
